What to Put on Your Face After Microneedling: Products to Use, Avoid and When to Restart

After microneedling, put only gentle, fragrance free products on your face for the first few days: a calming serum such as hyaluronic acid, a plain moisturizer and, from the next morning, a mineral sunscreen. Your skin has thousands of tiny open channels, so anything you apply can travel deeper than usual. That makes fragrance, acids, retinol, vitamin C and harsh cleansers more likely to sting or irritate. Most people can slowly restart their full routine after about a week.
This guide explains what to use, which products are gentle enough and when to bring back each active ingredient. The products named are widely sold examples, not sponsored, and any similar fragrance free formula works too. When in doubt, choose the plainest option.
Why Product Choice Matters After Microneedling
Product choice matters after microneedling because healing skin absorbs ingredients far more easily. That is helpful for simple hydrators, but risky for strong actives and fragrance. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists stinging from skincare products among the possible side effects of microneedling. It also notes that microneedling devices are not cleared for use combined with other products such as creams.
The safest rule is to keep your routine short and plain until your skin has calmed down. Fewer products mean fewer chances of irritation. You can always add more once your skin has settled.
Your First Week Routine After Microneedling
Your first week routine should support healing with as few steps as possible. This is a simple plan that suits most skin types. Your provider may adjust it.
- Day 1. Leave the calming product from your session on, then rinse gently in the evening and apply a plain moisturizer.
- Days 2 to 3. Gentle cleanser, hyaluronic acid serum, moisturizer and mineral sunscreen in the morning.
- Days 4 to 7. Same routine, plus a richer moisturizer or balm on any dry or flaky spots.
- After 1 week. Add back your actives one at a time, starting with the gentlest.
Our full microneedling aftercare guide covers everything else to do and avoid in the first week. It also explains washing, makeup and sun protection. Keep both guides handy for your first session.
Best Cleanser After Microneedling
The best cleanser after microneedling is a mild, creamy or gel cleanser with no fragrance, acids or scrubbing beads. Look for a gentle, fragrance free cream or gel cleanser that lists ingredients such as glycerin, ceramides or panthenol. Use lukewarm water and your fingertips only. Avoid salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and glycolic cleansers for at least a week.
Hyaluronic Acid After Microneedling
Hyaluronic acid is one of the best things to put on your face after microneedling, because it hydrates without exfoliating. It draws water into the skin and helps calm tightness. Apply a few drops of a plain, fragrance free serum with hyaluronic acid (and ideally panthenol, or vitamin B5) to damp skin, two or three times a day if your skin feels dry. Always follow it with moisturizer to seal the water in.

Many professionals apply a hyaluronic acid product right after the session. Our guide to the best serums for microneedling explains what is used during treatment and why. At home, a plain serum is all your skin needs.
Best Moisturizer After Microneedling
The best moisturizer after microneedling is a fragrance free cream with barrier repairing ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin or panthenol. Rich creams suit dry skin, while lighter lotions suit oily skin. Apply it while skin is still slightly damp, and reapply whenever your face feels tight. Look for one of these types.
- A rich ceramide cream. Look for ceramides, cholesterol and glycerin. Best for dry, tight skin.
- A very plain, simple moisturizer. Choose a short ingredient list with no fragrance, dyes or botanical extracts. Good for reactive skin.
- A soothing panthenol balm. Look for panthenol (vitamin B5) as a main ingredient. Good for dry, flaky spots.
- A calming barrier repair cream. Look for panthenol, zinc and soothing ingredients such as centella. Good for sensitive skin.
Sunscreen After Microneedling
Sunscreen is essential after microneedling, because healing skin burns and darkens easily. Start a broad spectrum mineral sunscreen the morning after treatment, unless your provider says otherwise, and stay out of direct sun for the first two days. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Look for a gentle mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients. A tinted formula can also help hide mild redness.
Hypochlorous Acid After Microneedling
Hypochlorous acid sprays are often used after microneedling to keep skin clean and calm. Despite the name, hypochlorous acid is not an exfoliating acid. It is a gentle cleansing ingredient that many providers use around treatments. A fragrance free spray with hypochlorous acid as the main ingredient can be misted on clean skin before moisturizer.
When to Restart Actives After Microneedling
Restart active ingredients slowly, one at a time, once your skin has stopped feeling tender and no longer stings. This table shows typical timing after a standard facial microneedling session. Your provider may change it for your skin.
| Product | When to restart |
|---|---|
| Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, panthenol | Right away, if fragrance free |
| Hypochlorous acid spray | Right away |
| Niacinamide | After 3 to 5 days, if skin does not sting |
| Vitamin C serum | After about 1 week |
| Peptides and copper peptides | After about 1 week |
| Retinol | After about 1 week, a few nights a week at first |
| Tretinoin or other prescription retinoids | After about 1 week, or as your prescriber advises |
| Azelaic acid | After about 1 week |
| AHA, BHA and exfoliating scrubs | After 1 to 2 weeks |
If a product stings when you restart it, stop for a few more days. Bring it back every other night before using it daily. Add only one new active per week, so you can tell what your skin tolerates.
What Not to Put on Your Face After Microneedling
Do not put retinol, vitamin C, exfoliating acids, scrubs, fragrance, essential oils, alcohol based toners or makeup on your face in the first days after microneedling. These can sting, inflame open channels and raise the risk of breakouts and dark marks. Skip face masks, at home devices and products you have never used before. Snail mucin and other trendy essences should also wait until your skin has healed, unless your provider suggests one.
If your skin stings, swells or itches badly after a product, rinse it off with cool water and stop using it. Our guide to microneedling healing stages explains what normal recovery looks like. Contact your provider if irritation does not settle within a day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I put on my face after microneedling?
For the first few days, use only a gentle cleanser, a plain hyaluronic acid serum, a fragrance free moisturizer and, from the next morning, a mineral sunscreen. Avoid retinol, vitamin C, acids, scrubs, fragrance and makeup. Most people can restart their full routine after about a week.
How long after microneedling can I use retinol?
Wait about one week after microneedling before using retinol. Healing skin is more sensitive, and retinol can cause stinging, redness and peeling. Restart a few nights a week, then build up. If you use prescription tretinoin, follow your prescriber’s advice on timing.
Can I use vitamin C after microneedling?
Wait about one week after microneedling before using vitamin C serum. Vitamin C is acidic and can sting freshly treated skin. Once your skin feels normal, start every other morning under sunscreen and increase slowly if your skin stays comfortable.
When can I exfoliate after microneedling?
Wait one to two weeks after microneedling before using exfoliating acids, scrubs or cleansing brushes. Your skin is already renewing and may flake lightly on days 3 to 5. Let flakes fall off on their own, and use moisturizer to soften them instead of scrubbing.
